layering an animation with paper

Posted by MotorOil09 - 6 hours ago

Are constant updates ok here or would I be better off posting these on a microblogging site like twitter?

This weekend, I got a few more things done. Drew a few frames and familiarized myself with one idea I had for creating my layers; relying solely on the paper itself. Here's what I got done for that along with my nearly done rough for a single movement:iu_1380510_19101564.gif

I Achieved this by cutting around the subject I traced, making sure to leave uncut areas to act as supports (while keeping in mind of any other objects that would be included in the final scene). I then cut out everything within frame of what would contain the final work except the subject and supports connecting it to the edges of the paper.

I honestly feel pretty satisfied with the result. For one of the more cheaper options on my list of ideas (besides going full digital) it definitely doesn't look bad. I feel like this could be explored a little further through some experimentation on how the supports can help frame the shot or how it can be used to emphasize certain emotions.

However, there are a few limitations to this that would deter me from using this for every project. the supports make any moving object in a scene obvious which could limit how you control what the audience sees. And there's only so many layers that you can use before the background gets heavily obscured. I'm gonna have to think long and hard before using this to save a few bucks.

I hope whoever reads this found this interesting enough to try it out.
